Is Your Moisturizer Ruining Your Tan?

The key to a self-tan that lasts is… moisturizer! Using the right moisturizer correctly will help keep your skin glowing and beautiful. The wrong moisturizer and use of it, however, will ruin your tan. Peta Jane Beauty is here to make sure you’re giving your skin all the love it needs for a youthful, bronzed glow!

Should I moisturize before self-tanning?

The million-dollar question: Should you moisturize before self-tanning? Yes… but be strategic! You should avoid moisturizing your whole body before tanning, but some parts of your body deserve some extra TLC.

You can apply a light layer of moisturizer so your tan can apply evenly to any trouble areas or dry patches craving extra love. Think hands, feet, knees, and elbows. Our trusty guide has the best tips for applying to your hands and feet if you need extra guidance. Like we said, we got you!

    Should I moisturize post self-tanning?

Yes, you should! Moisturizing can help your glow last a little longer. But hold off until your tan has fully developed and has been rinsed off before applying.

Make moisturizing a daily ritual post-shower, and remember, keep your skin protected with SPF when you're in the sun. Hydrated, moisturized, and protected skin means your tan will last a bit longer.

If you're looking to extend, accelerate or build your tan, we recommend the Peta Jane Tan Extender lotion. It's your ultimate companion for radiant and optimized tans.

What's the best moisturizer for fake tans?

Now that we’re all on the same page about when, where, and how to moisturize for the best sunless tan, let’s talk about which moisturizers to use and which not to use.

Some moisturizers will leave your skin youthful and glowing while others will just be a waste of your time! Here’s a list of ingredients and products that are best for fake tans:

    • Fragrance-free
    • Shea butter
    • Coconut oil
    • Oil-free
    • Aloe vera

And a list of some of our favorite moisturizers:

    • Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Radiant
    • Aveeno Daily Moisturizer
    • NATIVE lotion (and their body wash is great too!)

On the flip side, some moisturizers will strip your tan, causing patches, streaks, or early fading. Avoid these ingredients like the plague:

      • Fragrances
      • Essential oils
      • Mineral oil
      • Exfoliating lotions
      • Make-up removal products
      • Added chemicals
      • Anti-aging products
      • Hair removal products
      • Toners

Your skin should be thanking you for all the great care you’re taking to make sure it’s glowing and soft. Get out there and show off that beautiful tan!
